Promoting Independence

Our Promoting Independence Service is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with learning disabilities. Our goal is to provide opportunities for personal growth, meaningful activities, and the chance to lead more independent lives. Our aim is not just to provide a service, but to create an enriching environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered. Come, be a part of our journey towards promoting independence and enriching lives.

Fostering Growth + Community

At the heart of Promoting Independence Service lies a clear, client-centred mission: to empower individuals with learning disabilities, promoting their independence and enriching their lives in a fun, meaningful way. Our work isn’t just about providing support; it’s about fostering growth and building a community where everyone has the chance to thrive. Our service is client-led, which means we are guided by the interests, preferences, and needs of the individuals we work with. Our activities range from health and wellbeing sessions and creative arts to educational and social sessions, all designed to foster personal development and a strong sense of community.

Whether you’re an individual looking for support, a volunteer wanting to make a difference, or a donor ready to contribute to our cause, you are welcome in our community. Let’s work together to foster growth and build a brighter future for all.

Our focus is on 3 specific aims:

  1. Delivering fun and meaningful group activities: We believe in the power of shared experiences and the joy they bring. Our activities range from creative arts to wellness sessions and educational programmes, all designed to promote learning, happiness, and a sense of achievement.

  2. Promoting a client-led approach: We believe that everyone should have control over their lives. That’s why we encourage our clients to get involved in planning and leading sessions, making decisions, and expressing their views on the services we provide. This empowers them to lead more independent, autonomous lives.

  3. Building relationships: We believe in the strength of community. By fostering healthy relationships within Burton Street and with the wider Sheffield community, we help our clients to broaden their experiences and enjoy a greater sense of belonging.

Our Objectives: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Lives

In our Promoting Independence Service, our overarching objective is to empower every individual we serve, transforming their lives through the Promoting Independence Service. We believe that each person, regardless of their learning ability, has a right to lead an enriched life, filled with fun, creativity, and independence.

Our journey so far has been defined by inspiring moments and milestones. We have designed a wide array of high-quality, original activities that span across health and wellbeing sessions, creative arts activities, educational and social gatherings. We have successfully established a rich programme of evening sessions and events such as the ‘Solo’ exhibition, our Monthly Community Meal, and International Women’s Day celebrations.

Client-Led Empowerment and Self-Advocacy

Our initiatives are guided by the voices of our clients. Through the development of self-advocacy skills, understanding unique communication styles, and active listening, we ensure our service is client-led. This empowers our clients to plan sessions, express their views, and lead more autonomous lives.

In our endeavour to enrich lives, we strive to foster a sense of community and belonging. We actively collaborate with local and wider communities, forging partnerships to create exciting opportunities for the individuals we support.
